Foreshadowing-a warning or indication of a future event
Suspense-a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about about what may happen
Foreshadowing Examples:
On page 27, the passage:
"Can't land on Indian Island when there's a southeasterly. Sometimes 'tis cut off for a week or more."
On page 36, the passage:
"'I must go through with it I suppose.'"
On page 31, the passage:
"Ten little Indian boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine.
Nine little Indian boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were eight.
Eight little Indian boys traveling in Devon;
One said he'd stay there and then there were seven.
Seven little Indian boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were six.

Six little Indian boys playing with a hive;
A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.
Five little Indian boys going in for law;
One got in the Chancery and then there were four.

Suspense Examples:
On page 32, the passage:
"From here there was no land to be seen anywhere - just a vast expanse of blue water rippling in the evening sun."
On page 28, the passage:
"Mr. Owen - unfortunately delayed - unable to get her till to-morrow."
On page 29, the passage:
"Mrs Rogers' eyelashes flickered.
'I haven't seen Mrs. Owen - Not yet. We only came here two days ago."
On page 37, the passage:
"For two pins he'd make an excuse and get away.... Throw up the whole business....
But the motor boat had gone back to the mainland.
He'd have to stay."
I chose these examples because I believe that they are the ones that fit the definition of their respective term the best. In the examples of foreshadowing that I chose, they clearly hint towards an event, or series of events, that are soon to come. They all hint towards a tragedy that will occur at some point in the story, leading to serious problems the characters are going to need to overcome. The exception to those statements is the fourth example. The fourth example foreshadows the overall disaster that will finish the group for good. The examples of suspense all add a little bit of question into the readers mind about what is going to happen next. Each excerpt makes the reader wonder how this will affect what he or she had envisioned the storyline turning out to be. Even the characters saying these things seem to be uncertain about what will happen next and slightly scared about why this is all true.
